As part of the GEG Africa trade and regional developments theme, GEG Africa explored the opportunities and challenges associated with the rapid growth in e-commerce, and how these are addressed in global trade negotiations. The objectives of this research project were to identify Africa’s interests in the debate around e-commerce at global economic governance fora and to recommend specific and pro-active positions that can be presented by South Africa and other African countries within these discussions.
Three country case studies (South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya) were commissioned to understand the state of e-commerce in each country, the current regulatory framework, and the interests and positions of government and other stakeholders (including private sector developers and providers). The results from these case studies were presented at the workshop. The workshop helped to identify further policy and research work going forward.
