  • Location: Pretoria

A Study Group on Beneficial Ownership, co-hosted by GEG Africa and the South African Department of Public Service and Administration, brought together various stakeholders from international and local spheres to discuss the issues surrounding transparency in beneficial ownership.

“Financial transparency and effective implementation of the standards on transparency by all, in particular with regard to the beneficial ownership of legal persons and legal arrangements, is vital to protecting the integrity of the international financial system, and to preventing misuse of these entities and arrangements for corruption, tax evasion, terrorist financing and money laundering”
- the G20 Leaders’ Communique Hangzhou Summit

Transparency in Beneficial Ownership falls under the topic of illicit financial flows, yet it is cross-cutting, as it touches on tax and transparency issues (BEPS), terrorist financing, money laundering, and corruption. Research in this area is informed by the G20 High-Level Principles on transparency and the open government initiative.
